Under the leadership of the Turkish Folk Dances Federation, a record attempt was held at the Istanbul Maltepe Event Area, where 5,000 costumed folk dancers performed the horon dance simultaneously, entering the Guinness World Records.
With the slogan "Horon is ours," folk dancers from various provinces formed a giant horon circle in colorful costumes. Guinness Turkey Representative Şeyda Subaşı explained the rules to the participants before the attempt.
In his speech before the record attempt, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said, "The horon is ours, the halay is ours, and it is our most important duty to embrace everything that belongs to us in these lands and pass it on to future generations." Stating that the resulting scene was one of Turkey's most beautiful images, Gül added, "May God keep our unity, integrity, and brotherhood eternal. On this occasion, I convey the congratulations and thanks of our President to those who contributed, and I offer my respects to you all."
Turkish Folk Dances Federation President Hüseyin Güler emphasized the great significance of the organization for the country, saying, "We will show the whole world how connected we are, how we become one heart when we come together with our state and nation. We protect our culture and our past. We do not allow anyone to engage in cultural plunder here." Güler also added that they aim to break a 'zeybek' record with 15,000 people in Izmir next year.
Maltepe Mayor Esin Köymen, a native of Rize, expressed her belief that the horon attempt would be successful and her satisfaction that this special moment took place in Maltepe.
Governor Gül gave the start for the record attempt. Thousands of folk dancers performed the horon for about three minutes, then awaited the evaluation of Guinness officials. Guinness Turkey Representative Şeyda Subaşı announced that the Turkish Folk Dances Federation was successful in the Turkish Folk Dances category. After the decision, the participants celebrated their joy by dancing the horon again.
