New York’s world-famous Times Square was the scene of a fatal stabbing during the daytime on Monday. The New York Police Department said its initial findings indicated that the attack was random and unprovoked, with no known connection between the victims and the attacker.
The victim was identified as 32-year-old Erin Piacenti, who served as Bank of America’s Vice President of Business Selection and Conflicts. Piacenti lived in New Jersey and was in Times Square when the attack occurred. Bank of America also confirmed her death and issued a message of condolence.

A second attack followed within seconds of the first
Police said the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31.
According to authorities, 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros was moving through the area with two large kitchen knives when she first stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen as he exited the subway.
Authorities said the attacker targeted Piacenti approximately 20 seconds later. The young woman was also stabbed in the abdomen.
Both victims were taken to the hospital, but Piacenti died despite medical efforts. The other victim was reported to be in stable condition.
Police tried for several minutes to persuade the attacker
After the attack, NYPD officers surrounded Cisneros near a police post in Times Square.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers ordered the woman for approximately four minutes to drop the knives she was holding. Police also used a stun gun to subdue her, but it was unsuccessful.
When Cisneros continued advancing toward the officers with two knives, two NYPD officers opened fire. The seriously wounded woman was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Police believe the attack was random
One of the most notable aspects of the investigation is the absence of any known connection between the attacker and the victims.
Police initially determined that the attack was not directed at predetermined individuals. Investigators believe the victims were targeted at random in Times Square.
Authorities also said the available evidence did not indicate a terrorist connection. Cisneros had no previous arrest record in NYPD databases, but police said she had a mental health history known to them.

She had recently celebrated her second wedding anniversary
Personal details that emerged following Piacenti’s death brought wider attention to the incident in the U.S. press.
The New York Post reported that Piacenti celebrated her second wedding anniversary on August 10.
Piacenti graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016, later attended Fordham University School of Law and received her law degree in 2021. She pursued a career in the financial sector and most recently held a vice president-level position at Bank of America.
Daytime attack in the heart of Times Square
The fact that the incident occurred during the daytime in Times Square, one of New York’s busiest tourist areas, renewed security discussions in the city.
The NYPD is continuing its investigation. Police are reviewing security camera footage and other evidence to determine the exact motive for the attack and the attacker’s movements before the incident.
