In the parliamentary election in Germany’s Saxony-Anhalt state, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came first with 44.5% of the vote, according to an exit poll conducted by ARD television.
The Christian Democratic Union received 18.5%, The Left 9.5%, the Greens 9% and the Social Democratic Party 8% of the vote. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance reached 5%, passing the electoral threshold according to preliminary results.
The AfD’s vote share increased by 23.7 percentage points compared with the 2021 election. As the party did not secure an outright majority, its ability to form a government may depend on coalition talks, according to the exit poll.
Final election results are expected to be announced overnight or the following day.
