Support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) reached 30 percent in a nationwide poll conducted by the GMS research institute.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remained at 20 percent. This was the lowest level of support GMS has measured for the CDU/CSU to date.
Support for other parties
The Greens received 14 percent support in the poll, while support for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party stood at 11 percent each.
Debate after the Saxony-Anhalt elections
The CDU's heavy defeat against the AfD in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt has revived debate over Merz's leadership within the party.
While speculation about a change of chancellor has continued for weeks, North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst is being mentioned as one of Merz's possible successors.
