The AfD won the state parliament election in Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to provisional official results announced by the State Election Committee, the AfD received 38.2 percent of the vote.
AfD wins the most seats in parliament
With 32 members in the 71-seat state parliament, the AfD became the party with the most seats. The SPD won 29 seats with 35.5 percent of the vote, while The Left and the Greens will each be represented by five seats after receiving 6.5 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively.
The AfD thus rose to become the strongest political party in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Parliament for the first time. The party more than doubled its vote share, increasing it by 21.5 percentage points from the 16.7 percent it received in the 2021 election.
CDU and BSW fail to clear the threshold
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), whose chairman is Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, received 4.9 percent of the vote, falling below the 5 percent electoral threshold. For the first time since 1945, the CDU failed to enter a state parliament.
The CDU received 13.3 percent of the vote in the 2021 election. After losing 8.4 percentage points compared with the previous election, the party recorded its lowest vote share in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany in a state election.
The Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) also fell below the threshold with 4.8 percent of the vote and failed to enter the State Parliament.
SPD finishes second
The SPD, which has been in government in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for nearly 30 years, finished second with 35.5 percent despite losing votes. The SPD received 39.6 percent of the vote in the 2021 election.
Government formation becomes more complicated
Although the AfD became the largest party, it failed to secure enough seats to form a government on its own, making the positions of the other parties decisive. The BSW's failure to clear the 5 percent threshold also made it more difficult for the AfD to reach the parliamentary majority needed to form a government.
The existing governing partnership between the SPD and The Left does not hold a majority in the new parliament. After the CDU and BSW failed to enter parliament, a coalition comprising the SPD, The Left and the Greens gained importance in terms of the parliamentary arithmetic.
The AfD's emergence as the largest party in the state and the CDU's failure to clear the 5 percent threshold have prompted debate over the political implications of the election results for the federal government.
