The play takes its name from the novel "Ali and Nino", published in Vienna in 1937 under the name Kurban Said. Set in Baku, the novel tells the love story of the Muslim Azerbaijani Ali Khan Shirvanshir and the Christian Georgian Nino Kipiani. The work is widely regarded as Azerbaijan's national novel.
