Professor Aziz Sancar, the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate, highlighted the importance of Atatürk's reforms in remarks made on the 103rd anniversary of the Republic. Sancar said, "We became literate through Atatürk's reforms."
'I studied at a primary school opened by Atatürk'
"I studied at a primary school opened by Atatürk. I was educated by Village Institute teachers trained by Atatürk and his comrades. They were very appreciative people devoted to their work. They raised us very well," Sancar said.
Explaining that his mother, father and older sisters could not read or write, Sancar said: "Because at that time there were no educational opportunities in many parts of Türkiye. With Atatürk's reforms, literacy for everyone, young and old, and education for children were made available across Türkiye."
Sancar advised young people to work hard

Addressing young people, Sancar said, "My advice to young people is: Do not engage in politics. Work hard and do useful things for your country, yourselves and your families."
This week, Sancar also met with students at the "An Ideal of Science: Aziz Sancar" panel organized by the Confederation of Türkiye Youth Clubs at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. At the panel, Sancar said, "No success comes easily. You need to work very hard, be persistent and view the subject as your rival," and advised young people to go to Europe and the United States to learn scientific discipline but return to Türkiye.
He had donated his medal to Anıtkabir
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had also received Sancar at the Presidential Complex on October 26. Sancar, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on DNA repair mechanisms, had donated his Nobel medal to Anıtkabir.
