MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli stood by Rahmi Koç, Honorary Chairman of Koç Holding, who became the target of criticism and an investigation due to sexist remarks directed at Kurdish women. Bahçeli also expressed his opposition to the investigation initiated against Koç.
'INITIATING AN INVESTIGATION OVER A JOKE IS WRONG' In a written statement, Bahçeli said: "The Koç Group has taken on significant responsibilities in our country's development efforts for 100 years. Alongside its distinguished investments contributing to employment, it has always acted with a responsible approach in embracing Turkey's national goals and aiming for the Republic to reach a high level.
At a time when it celebrated its 100th anniversary successfully and magnificently, it is wrong to launch an investigation against Mr. Rahmi Koç over a joke made in a sincere conversation during the opening of a hospital in İzmir, which also belongs to the same group.
'WE DO NOT APPROVE OF TARGETING WITH UNACCEPTABLE EXPRESSIONS' We do not find it right that a respected businessman, who has carried a desire to serve Turkey throughout his 95 years of life with the upbringing and stance he received from his family, is targeted with unacceptable expressions." WHAT HAPPENED? At the opening of the Vehbi Koç Foundation's new hospital in İzmir, Rahmi Koç made sexist remarks about Kurdish women.
Former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, who was present, was seen laughing at Koç's remarks. Many users reacted to Rahmi Koç's words on digital media accounts, demanding an apology to Kurdish women. The reactions trended on social media under the hashtag #RahmiKoçÖzürDile. The DEM Party Women's Assembly, bar associations, politicians, human rights defenders, and AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik criticized Koç.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into Koç's remarks. (POLITICS SERVICE).
