Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates discussed the risks of artificial intelligence in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” recorded in New York during the UN General Assembly week.
“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths,” Gates said. In his view, the danger comes not from AI acting on its own but from humans misusing it: “There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
Gates said self-regulation by companies was not enough. “No one thinks self-regulation is enough. You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” he said, answering “Absolutely” when asked whether Washington should legislate. He reiterated that AI “will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented or the worst source of injustice.”
