BMW management and employee representatives have reached an agreement after weeks of talks on a voluntary separation program, according to the German press.
Under the agreement, the departure program will begin in October 2026 and run until the end of 2027. The program will reduce the total workforce by 8,000.
BMW, which has 150,000 employees worldwide and around 84,000 in Germany, will offer voluntary departure packages to approximately 40,000 staff not directly involved in production. The program will primarily cover employees in management, R&D, planning and administrative roles.
The amount of compensation paid to employees will be determined based on salary and seniority.
In June, BMW had revised its sales and profit outlook for 2026 downward, primarily due to shrinking demand in the Chinese market. The German automaker had announced that it would turn to cost-saving measures due to US tariffs, rising costs and global competitive pressures.
