Bob Dylan said that turning 80 causes a person to start seeing time differently. The famous artist wrote that at this age, "leaving behind the hours that chase you" represents a kind of freedom.
Dylan noted that the most striking aspect of aging is the disappearance of the illusion that anything is truly under control. According to him, at this point, a person no longer "chases the parade" and becomes someone who is less easily directed.
The artist also emphasized that aging is not only about positive aspects. He explained that the desire inside still pushes to do things, but the body often responds with "we've already done this."
Dylan described another difficult side of turning 80 as the feeling that comes from finally realizing some things too late. He believes that if this realization had come at a moment when it could have changed the course of life in the past, everything could have been very different.
This reflection was published as part of a piece prepared for Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. Dylan did not address Trump directly in his writing nor did he comment on politics.
Other figures in the same piece used harsh words toward Trump. Robert De Niro said the president does not take advice, while Gloria Steinem suggested he should resign.
Dylan’s recent concert schedule has also drawn attention. Since 2021, during the Rough And Rowdy Ways world tour, the artist has brought some songs from his archive back to the stage after a long break.
During the North America leg, it was reported that Dylan performed I Shall Be Released for the first time in 18 years and You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere for the first time in 14 years. In Dublin, he performed A Rainy Night In Soho for Shane MacGowan, and at another concert in Ireland, he sang a traditional folk ballad for the first time in 34 years.
Last year, it was also reported that Dylan was working on new music with some members of his own band in Albany, New York. The artist also contributed to Willie Nelson’s recently released Dream Chaser album last month.
