Bright Eyes was evacuated from the stage at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium during their 21st anniversary concert due to severe weather conditions. It was announced that the concert had to be canceled along with the Governors Ball festival, which was also affected by the storm that weekend.
Earlier this year, the band had announced three special concerts to celebrate the 21st anniversary of their albums ‘I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning’ and ‘Digital Ash in a Digital Urn.’ The first two shows in the series took place at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Following the cancellation, Conor Oberst shared the disappointment experienced by fans and said the band also struggled to cope with the situation. Oberst explained that they had been planning the concert for over a year and that the events disrupted their expectations.
Oberst described how the storm on June 6 advanced rapidly and struck with great force. He noted that decisions were continuously made in contact with meteorologists and city officials, and in this case, the worst-case scenario occurred for safety reasons.
The band had received approval to perform the "Wide Awake" set but took the stage with a warning that conditions could change quickly. According to Oberst, as the band was leaving the stage, organizers and venue officials informed them that the show had to be stopped immediately for everyone’s safety.
The artist said they had worked for months to bring the three concerts together, but two of the three events were affected by severe weather. As a result, they lost money and, most importantly, were unable to complete the celebration they had planned.
Information was also shared about how ticket holders could get refunds. Tickets purchased through AXS would be automatically fully refunded, while those who bought tickets from other sources were advised to contact their point of purchase.
Another notable moment for Bright Eyes last year was Oberst’s participation in a look-alike contest in Omaha. The artist gifted the contest winner a bag filled with his clothes.
A year ago, the band also released the critically acclaimed album Five Dice, All Threes, which featured collaborations with artists such as Cat Power, Matt Berninger from The National, and Alex Orange Drink from So So Glos.
