Kirilo Budanov, Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, met with Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in Poland on Saturday, June 6.
Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Poland and Ukraine are partners on security matters. However, when it comes to history, he emphasized that both sides must be honest with each other, noting that only on such a basis can a future be built.
During the meeting, the Polish Defense Minister clearly conveyed Warsaw's expectations regarding the naming of a military unit in Ukraine after the UPA. This statement brought back into focus the naming decision that has recently sparked debate between the two countries.
Kosiniak-Kamysz also stressed that the memory of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy is not open to debate. The minister pointed out that there are boundaries that must not be crossed and highlighted the need to preserve historical sensitivities.
A day earlier, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki also met with Kirilo Budanov. The main topic of that meeting was the controversy surrounding the name of the Ukrainian SSO unit.
Kosiniak-Kamysz had previously asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reconsider the decision to name the SSO unit "UPA heroes." Warsaw's latest message indicates that while security cooperation continues, it expects a clear stance on historical issues as well.
