In South Africa, it emerged that a portion worth 55 million rand of the 715-kilogram cocaine shipment valued at 286 million rand seized by the police in Johannesburg went missing. Colonel Francois Steyn, an official from the Gauteng Hawks unit who testified at the Madlanga Inquiry Commission, stated that while the cocaine should have been kept in a secure state warehouse, a part of it went missing without authorization. The incident occurred in 2021 when the cocaine shipment was seized by the police after being transported from Durban Port to Johannesburg. However, allegations arose that some suspicious activities, including involvement of certain police officers, led to a portion of the cocaine going missing. Steyn said the missing amount of cocaine was approximately 136 kilograms, valued at about 55 million rand. Additionally, investigations were conducted against some police officers and other suspects connected to the case, but the trials were withdrawn for various reasons. These developments highlight the challenges faced in combating organized crime and corruption in South Africa. The Madlanga Commission continues to investigate possible corruption and crime links within state institutions in such cases.
