Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney answered reporters' questions in Istanbul on the second day of his visit to Türkiye. Praising Türkiye's defense industry, Carney said, "Türkiye produces approximately 80% of its own defense needs domestically. That is not the case in Canada. We have much to learn."
A journalist noted that Türkiye has a well-established defense industry, particularly in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles, and asked whether Canada was interested in purchasing Turkish military technology or establishing an industrial partnership. Carney replied, "Both."
Carney said, "We are in a position where we need Türkiye's defense industry expertise even more to protect Canadians."
The two countries had elevated their relations to the level of a strategic partnership during Carney's talks in Ankara on October 22 and signed a memorandum of understanding on the defense industry.
"Türkiye is a modern European country and also an Asian country"
Describing Türkiye as a "unique country," Carney said: "As you know, Türkiye is a modern European country and a unique country. It is also an Asian country. It is a country with its own distinct character. It is located at a crossroads. It has a very, very deep history and is also highly modern. Its food is very good, too. There are many reasons to build a relationship."
A football joke
Carney also joked about his evening in Istanbul: "It also has a good football team; I could tell from the noise coming through my window while I was trying to sleep last night. Yes, although they drew with Palace, so perhaps it was not their best night." The match Carney referred to was the Beşiktaş-Crystal Palace game played at Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul on the evening of October 22 in the UEFA Europa League.
