According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, cybercrime operations were carried out across 21 provinces under the coordination of the Cybercrime Department of the General Directorate of Security, the Financial Crimes Investigation Board and the offices of the chief public prosecutors.
The operations, conducted over the past five days, targeted aggravated fraud, illegal betting, online child sexual abuse and harassment, and the laundering of assets derived from crime.
A total of 150 suspects were detained in the operations. Of the suspects, 76 were arrested by the criminal judgeships of peace to which they were referred, while 17 were placed under judicial control. Proceedings against the remaining suspects are ongoing.
Charges against the suspects
The suspects were alleged to have stored obscene images involving children, facilitated illegal betting and gambling, acted as intermediaries in the transfer of money through illegal betting websites and advertised those websites.
The investigation also indicated that some suspects had gained unauthorized access to citizens’ mobile banking and gaming accounts and had committed fraud on social media platforms using “product payment” and “investment partnership” themes.
