Emir Sarıgül, who was detained as part of an investigation into money laundering and assets targeting the Sarıgül family, was brought from prison to give an additional statement to the prosecutor. He made allegations about his father, Mustafa Sarıgül, and Yeni Parti Chairman Özgür Özel. CNN Türk and Sabah reported that Sarıgül said his father gave Özel a total of $350,000 in two separate deliveries.
The alleged two deliveries
According to Emir Sarıgül, the first delivery took place during construction work on a building being prepared for the establishment of Yeni Parti. Sarıgül alleged that his father left approximately $250,000 in the rear of a vehicle belonging to Özel as they were leaving a restaurant in Ankara’s Ümitköy district. Sarıgül said he learned this directly from his father.
The second delivery allegedly took place last month. According to Sarıgül’s account, his father asked him to buy two scarves, saying that Özel would come to his home in Ankara for a meal. It was alleged that $100,000 was placed in the gift package containing the scarves and that the package was delivered to Özel at the home in the Ulus Platin residences.
Request for protection and release
In his additional statement, Emir Sarıgül said he was concerned for his safety and requested his release, including transfer to house arrest, as well as close protection from the state. Sarıgül also claimed that his father had not transferred to him the wealth inherited from his mother.
CNN Türk reported that although Mustafa Sarıgül’s name appears in the case file, no action was taken against him at this stage because of his parliamentary immunity. More than 20 people are detained in the investigation, while the MASAK report and account transactions are expected to be examined. Özgür Özel has not yet made a statement on the allegations.
