Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed in remarks on his engagements at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta, United States, that the Russia-Ukraine War must end as soon as possible.
Recalling that the war had continued for nearly five years, Fidan said, "This war is no longer sustainable. Therefore, Russia and Ukraine have to make major sacrifices and reach an agreement." Fidan said relations between Europe and Russia also needed to be redefined constructively after the peace, adding, "The peace Ukraine makes with Russia will not be only between the two countries."
"These costs must be brought to an end"
Fidan said the war had caused serious harm not only to European economies but to the entire world, and that this impact had multiplied with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Referring to statements that the war's energy cost to Europe was approximately 100 billion euros, Fidan said the total bill could be even higher.
Fidan drew attention to the severe restrictions on trade in the Black Sea, saying Russian and Ukrainian grain and energy could not reach world markets. Fidan said, "We are carrying out serious efforts to ensure that grain, in particular, can leave the Black Sea and reach international markets. I hope this war also comes to an end. Because many people are losing their lives."

US-Iran tensions and the Strait of Hormuz
Fidan said the dispute between the United States and Iran also needed to end as soon as possible, adding that nearly all the countries at the table agreed that another conflict should be avoided and diplomacy should be given a chance.
Fidan said he had met on the sidelines of the meeting with his US counterpart Marco Rubio as well as the ministers of Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Germany and Japan. "Türkiye is an actor whose voice is needed on the international stage," he said.
Sinirlioğlu's candidacy
Fidan also addressed Feridun Sinirlioğlu, whom Türkiye officially nominated for UN secretary-general. Recalling that, by convention, it was Latin America's turn but that no agreement had been reached on a candidate, Fidan said, "Our aim is to make a diplomatic contribution toward overcoming the deadlock."
