Egyptian poet Abd al-Rahman Yusuf al-Qaradawi thanked Türkiye and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his first video message after his detention in the United Arab Emirates ended.
Al-Qaradawi said the Republic of Türkiye and Erdoğan had worked from the beginning of the crisis to bring the process to an end. He also thanked Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security institutions, saying they had played important roles.
The poet also thanked the United Arab Emirates and President Mohammed bin Zayed for responding to mediation efforts and issuing an amnesty decision. Al-Qaradawi extended his thanks to public figures who supported his release.
Al-Qaradawi said his beliefs and principles had not changed and that he had not been subjected to any physical or verbal attack while detained in the United Arab Emirates.
Released under an amnesty decision
The United Arab Emirates announced on Friday that an amnesty decision had been issued for al-Qaradawi. On August 27, al-Qaradawi had been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined approximately $54,000 by the Electronic Crimes Division of the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal on charges brought against him.
The United Arab Emirates announced that it had taken custody of al-Qaradawi from Lebanon on January 10, 2025. The handover took place following a provisional arrest request issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and submitted by the competent authorities of the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE Ministry of Justice had requested his handover on charges that al-Qaradawi had carried out acts aimed at inciting and disrupting public order.
