Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Muslims should be able to integrate into the societies where they live without having to give up their language, culture or roots.
Speaking at an event held at Gotham Hall in New York on Wednesday, Erdoğan said Muslims in many parts of Europe in particular were expected to assimilate rather than integrate. Erdoğan delivered the message: “Yes to integration, no to all forms of assimilation.”
Call for political and social participation by the Turkish community
Erdoğan said learning the Turkish community’s language and culture and maintaining ties with the homeland did not prevent integration. He said the representation of Turkish Americans in political, economic, academic, cultural and artistic life should be strengthened.

Erdoğan called for individual achievements to be transformed into strong institutions and lasting structures that could be passed down from one generation to the next. He said stronger communities could contribute to efforts to combat anti-Muslim sentiment, xenophobia and discrimination.
Call to vote in the U.S. midterm elections
Erdoğan also addressed the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, urging citizens to exercise their democratic rights and express their will as strongly as possible at the ballot box.
Erdoğan also said communities in the U.S. should continue their activities in a spirit of unity, solidarity and fellowship. At the event organized by the Turkish-American National Steering Committee, the Union of International Democrats, the Independent Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association and the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations, he said support for the Turkish community would continue.
