The U.S. State Department’s fiscal year 2027 refugee admissions plan submitted to Congress proposes limiting the number of refugees admitted to the country to 17,500. The plan calls for most of this quota to be allocated to South African Afrikaners.
Estimated cost of approximately $500 million
Resettling the refugees in the United States is expected to cost approximately $500 million in fiscal year 2027.
Policy toward Afrikaners
In an executive order he signed in February 2025, Donald Trump accused the South African government of racial discrimination against Afrikaners and instructed U.S. agencies to prioritize admitting these people as refugees.
For fiscal year 2026, the U.S. administration raised the refugee admissions quota in May to 17,500 from the initial figure of 7,500. It decided to allocate the additional 10,000 places created by the increase to South African Afrikaners.
The South African government had previously rejected claims that Afrikaners faced systematic discrimination and persecution in the country, saying that the allegations did not reflect reality.
