The collection of 525 rare works that Prof. Dr. İsmail Erünsal assembled over many years using his personal resources has been made accessible worldwide after the completion of digitization efforts.
Erünsal donated his collection to the Süleymaniye Manuscript Library on August 6. Known for his research on Ottoman book and library history, Erünsal said he regarded the works as a trust belonging to the nation and that, through the donation, he had returned this trust to its rightful owner.
Collection made accessible in about two months
The Presidency of the Türkiye Manuscripts Institution completed the conservation, restoration, digitization and cataloging of the works in the collection in about two months.
Following the work, unique copies, rare works and autograph manuscripts were made available for examination online. Among the collection’s notable items is the Divan that Şeyh Galib wrote in his own handwriting when he was 18 or 19 years old.
Erünsal said the recent activities of the Presidency of the Türkiye Manuscripts Institution had influenced his decision to donate the collection. He said he was very pleased to donate the collection so that the manuscripts could be better preserved and more people could benefit from them.
