Opened in 2020 within Atatürk University’s Faculty of Fine Arts with support from the Northeast Anatolia Development Agency, the Ata Ice Museum welcomes visitors in all four seasons. The museum, a popular destination in Erzurum especially for those seeking relief from the heat in summer, has received more than 300,000 visitors to date.
The museum hosts exhibitions featuring ice artworks created as part of master’s and doctoral students’ projects. The ice blocks are illuminated in different colors using lighting systems, while temperatures inside the museum can fall as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius.
Visitors must tour the museum in winter outdoor clothing. Aydın Doğan, a student in the Sculpture Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, said visitors are impressed by the ice artworks.
Doğan said they create ice sculptures at the museum and noted that Türkiye’s first ice museum was opened within the faculty. Saying that temperatures are generally around minus 5 degrees Celsius during the work, Doğan added that turning off the fans makes the working environment more comfortable.
Doğan said work at the museum intensifies during academic terms and that visitors are surprised when they see the ice artworks and wonder how they are made. He noted that previous works at the museum had included an eagle’s head, a rearing horse and Erzurum’s traditional houses.
Doğan said the museum remains active during the summer and welcomes visitors seeking relief from the heat. He explained that the ice is produced at the museum and that blocks prepared in storage rooms and freezers are shaped with saws, hand saws and carving tools in line with the designs.
Works reflecting Erzurum’s culture
Students also create sculptures at the museum as part of an ice-making course. Exhibitions prepared through master’s and doctoral projects mainly explore themes related to the Erzurum region and the city’s culture.
Doğan said they also create bird and penguin figures for children and noted that they want to work on coloring the ice in the future. He said the project is progressing through a process of trial and error.
