The European Commission has classified ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as very large online services under the Digital Services Act.
ChatGPT, which reaches an average of at least 45 million users per month within the European Union, was classified as a “Very Large Online Search Engine.” Reddit, a social news and discussion platform, and Roblox, a digital gaming platform, were designated as “Very Large Online Platforms.”
Deadline for compliance is December 2026
The services must comply with the additional obligations for very large online platforms and search engines by the end of December 2026.
As part of these obligations, the companies will have to assess and mitigate systemic risks linked to the spread of illegal content, adverse effects on children, users’ physical and mental health, fundamental rights, election processes and public security.
Commission’s investigative powers will expand
The classification decisions also give the European Commission authority to investigate the functions of the services and the systems connected to them.
Following the latest decisions, the total number of very large online platforms and search engines classified by the EU under the Digital Services Act has risen to 28.
