Israel’s and Greece’s defense ministries signed an agreement in Tel Aviv to establish a multilayered air defense system called “Achilles’ Shield,” worth approximately €3 billion.
The signing ceremony was held at the Israeli Ministry of Defense complex with the participation of representatives from the defense institutions of both countries. The agreement is valued at more than 10 billion shekels, equivalent to approximately €3 billion.
Scope of the air defense package
Under the agreement, a multilayered air defense system will be established in Greece. The system will include David’s Sling and Barak MX components produced by Israel Aerospace Industries for use against aircraft and missiles.
The package will also include Rafael’s Spyder systems and MMR multifunctional radars produced by Israel Aerospace Industries. The radars are planned for use in air control.
The parties also agreed to develop a new national command-and-control system under Rafael’s leadership.
Additional agreement against unmanned aerial vehicles
Israel and Greece also signed an additional agreement worth €26 million, or approximately 92 million shekels, to protect strategic facilities against unmanned aerial vehicles.
The additional package covers the supply of Drone Dome systems produced by Rafael. The systems are expected to strengthen existing defense capabilities and contribute to the protection of strategic facilities.
Technology and knowledge transfer
The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that defense industry cooperation between the two countries would be expanded, including technology and knowledge transfer.
The ministry described the project as a new phase in defense cooperation between Israel and Greece and characterized Greece as a strategic partner in the Eastern Mediterranean.
