Former Foreign Minister and current Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Feridun Sinirlioğlu listed the areas he would prioritize in a vision document attached to his candidacy file for UN secretary-general. Titled “Preserving Multilateralism and Building Bridges,” the document covers topics ranging from international peace and security to sustainable development, emerging technologies and UN reform.
“The UN is indispensable”
Sinirlioğlu said international peace and security are under unprecedented pressure, adding, “I am running for secretary-general because I believe the United Nations is indispensable.” He stressed that this was not because the UN is perfect, but because no other institution has its universal legitimacy or ability to bring countries together.

Preventive diplomacy and mediation
Sinirlioğlu said diplomacy remains the most powerful tool for reducing tensions, adding, “Building dialogue with people with whom we disagree is not a concession but a responsibility.” He said the UN is responsible not only for resolving crises but also for preventing them, making it necessary to strengthen its early-warning, mediation and peacebuilding capacities.
The document also calls for global governance frameworks that support security and encourage innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity and space.
“We face a historic opportunity”
Sinirlioğlu said the UN must become more agile, transparent, financially responsible and accountable, stressing that reform should be carried out without compromising the organization’s core competencies. “We face a historic opportunity to make the organization the UN we need for the future,” he said.

Sinirlioğlu said he would remain committed to the principles of the UN Charter and approach all member states impartially if elected, adding, “Many of these conflicts originate in the broader region where I was also born and raised, but their effects are felt across the world.”
