FIFA President: 64-team World Cup idea to be evaluated
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the idea of expanding the World Cup to 64 teams will be discussed in the relevant committees after this year's tournament. Infantino stated that the expansion to 48 teams in 2026 was a great success.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the possibility of expanding the World Cup to 64 teams will be discussed in the relevant committees after the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
Speaking to Switzerland's Blue Sport portal, Infantino said, "Every nation should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup." The FIFA President described the tournament, which featured 48 teams for the first time in 2026, as "a tremendous success."
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will conclude on July 19. For the first time in history, 48 national teams are participating in the tournament.
