Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli made a statement on his social media account regarding the European Union's (EU) 'Common Understanding' document published on July 15, 2026.
The references to our country in the 'Common Understanding' document published by the EU on July 15, 2026, lack a strategic and fair approach. The document, which ignores Turkey's candidate status, reveals the EU's inability to develop a common future vision with our country.
It is seen that the document in question was penned in a tone that attempts to overshadow the fact that it comes right after the historic NATO Ankara Summit, where the foundations of a new era were laid with European Allies undertaking significant additional responsibilities within NATO and Turkey's indispensable role was confirmed.
The unfounded allegations voiced in the document in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean indicate that the EU cannot free itself from the influence of a prejudiced and distorted understanding. As for the Cyprus issue, we once again remind that the solution is blocked by the Greek Cypriot side, which rejected the UN Comprehensive Settlement Plan accepted by the Turkish Cypriot side in 2004 and adopted an intransigent stance at the 2017 Cyprus Conference, causing the process to remain inconclusive.
We invite the EU to adopt a realistic vision and discourse that suits the interests of both sides.

In his post, Spokesperson Keçeli called on the EU to adopt a realistic approach that suits the interests of the parties.
