The massive wildfires that have been raging for days in the Gironde region of southwestern France have caused severe economic and social impacts. The French government announced that more than 13,000 companies had temporarily suspended operations due to the fires. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from the same region.
French Minister of Economy and Finance Roland Lescure held an interagency crisis meeting in response to the large-scale wildfires over the summer. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lescure said the situation remains difficult.
Lescure noted that the fires had resulted not only in environmental and social consequences but also severe economic ones, and conveyed a message of support to the business community in Gironde.
Wildfire not yet contained
The Gironde fire has gone down in history as one of France's largest forest fires. Officials reported that the flames have so far engulfed around 42,000 hectares and that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated. Efforts to contain the fire are ongoing; however, it has not yet been fully contained.
