Belgium announced that more than 2,000 people died as a result of the heatwave that affected the European continent late last month.
According to the latest data released Monday by the European Mortality Monitoring Network (EuroMOMO), the death rate in Belgium rose to 48 percent during the heatwave. Over the same period, the rate was recorded at 23 percent in France and 13 percent in the Netherlands.
The data revealed that the heatwave had a particularly devastating impact in areas home to poorer populations.
Experts say that the "thermal dome" affecting the continent was the main cause of this heatwave. High-pressure systems trap hot air over Europe, preventing it from dispersing and causing temperatures to reach record levels.
Experts also point out that greenhouse gas emissions and climate change are intensifying such extreme weather events, with baseline temperatures rising compared to the past.
