Galatasaray will ask UEFA for extra security measures for its squad and traveling supporters ahead of its away match against French side Lille in the third round of the Champions League league phase, DHA reported. The request is prompted by the protests that have gripped France for days.
The Istanbul club is not seeking to move or postpone the match, only to strengthen the existing security arrangements. The club is also said to be in contact with the French Embassy and Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry.
Lille and Galatasaray meet on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:45 p.m. Turkish time (1645 GMT) at Lille’s home ground, Stade Pierre-Mauroy. No change to the venue or date has been announced.
Unrest in Lille
Protests across France have led to clashes between security forces and demonstrators. In Lille, the main march passed off peacefully, but trouble broke out in the city center and around the historic Grand-Place, where protesters entered the city hall and damaged it and some shops were looted. Local media said about 30 businesses were targeted.

During the Oct. 17 protests in France, 2,397 people were detained and 997 police officers and gendarmes were injured. President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on Oct. 18, saying those involved in the violence would be punished.
