Greek Basketball Federation President Liolios was detained as part of an investigation conducted by Athens Prosecutor Apostolis Grammenos over three months.
The investigation uncovered findings indicating that matches in the top division were fixed and illegal betting took place. Grammenos sought a detention order for Liolios on the grounds that he might flee.
Detention orders issued for six people
Detention orders were also issued for five other people, including referees, alongside Liolios. The suspects face charges of match-fixing, illegal betting and bribery.
Those detained are expected to give statements tomorrow.
Resignation is mandatory
Under sports law, Liolios must resign as president of the Greek Basketball Federation when the charges against him are formally communicated to him. Liolios has served as federation president since September 2021.
