The Iraq Traffic Department announced that the truck driver was negligent in the accident on the Baghdad-Basra road that led to the death of Rudaw Baghdad office manager Heltkeut Aziz. The agency reported that the driver is currently in police custody.
Traffic Department Press Branch Manager Lieutenant Colonel Haydar Shakir stated in a press release that the responsibility lies with the truck driver. Shakir explained that the truck was moving in a way that weakened control of the road, which set the stage for the collision.
How did the accident happen?
According to Shakir, the truck driver first drove onto a gravel surface, then lost control of the steering wheel and hit the corridor or roadside barrier. During this, a collision occurred between two vehicles, resulting in Heltkeut Aziz’s death.
The official noted that the court will make the final ruling on the cause of the accident. Issues such as whether there was a technical fault in the vehicle, or if the driver was asleep or fatigued, will be clarified during the judicial process.
Investigation and evidence
Shakir said there are witnesses to the incident, footage is available, and statements have been taken from both drivers. He added that all details will emerge once the investigation is complete.
The official also reminded that in traffic accidents resulting in death, imprisonment is a possible penalty. He emphasized that the person responsible will face legal action.
Security measures on the Baghdad-Basra road
The Iraq Traffic Department also announced a project to fully monitor the Baghdad-Basra road with smart cameras. The statement noted that this system aims to enhance road safety.
Heltkeut Aziz was seriously injured in the accident on the Baghdad-Basra road within Diyala province boundaries on Monday, June 8, 2026, and passed away two days later.
Media circles in Iraq have shared condolences over Aziz’s death, while the details of the traffic accident continue to be evaluated alongside the judicial process.
