UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese presented her report, titled “Truth Under the Rubble: Media in a Time of Genocide,” to the UN General Assembly. The report emphasized that the destruction of truth has become part of the destruction of a people and stated that some of Israel’s practices could be defined as “mediacide.”
According to the report, approximately 300 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, while more than 400 have been injured. A total of 710 relatives of journalists were killed, and the homes of more than 150 journalists were destroyed. As of October 2025, 150 media offices had been destroyed, while 81 percent of Gaza’s communications infrastructure had been eliminated. More than 100 journalists were abducted or detained.

The report alleged that journalists were targeted after being accused of belonging to the “Hamas network” or being “Hamas agents” before their deaths, and that some Western media organizations and social media platforms restricted Palestinian voices.
Albanese proposed establishing an independent mechanism affiliated with the UN General Assembly to document crimes against journalists. She called on Israel to stop the attacks, release those held arbitrarily and allow international media to enter Gaza.
