Ireland’s players and coaches again bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem before the teams’ second UEFA Nations League match, played behind closed doors in Bačka Topola, Serbia, and again wore black armbands. At Ireland’s insistence there were no customary handshakes, and stand-in captain Caoimhín Kelleher avoided shaking hands with Israel captain Dor Peretz. FAI chief executive David Courell had said the armbands were worn “in recognition of all lives lost in the conflict.” Reserve goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu skipped both games, citing his “personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong.”
