Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a statement to the Israeli press that they oppose the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey and that they are carrying out both open and behind-the-scenes efforts to block the sale.
Speaking to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Smotrich stated that they are holding intensive talks with US President Donald Trump, saying, "We are working very hard, both openly and behind the scenes, to prevent the sale of F-35s to Turkey."
The Israeli minister also used the expression, "Erdoğan should not be allowed access to weapons that will change the rules of the game." Smotrich claimed, "Erdoğan is a very dangerous man. Turkey, in its current state, is a very significant threat to Israel."
On the other hand, during the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit held in Ankara, US President Trump's positive messages regarding Turkey's return to the F-35 program had caused concern in the Tel Aviv administration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar had also emphasized in their earlier statements that they are against the sale of F-35s to Turkey and that the US must preserve Israel's "qualitative military edge" in the region.
