Uraloğlu announced that Istanbul Airport’s fourth main runway will open on September 18. The new runway will bring the airport’s total number of runways to six.
Built along the east-west axis, the concrete runway will be 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide. It will be Istanbul Airport’s first runway in this direction.
Shorter flight times targeted
The new runway is expected to shorten taxiing and airborne times, particularly for domestic flights and eastbound routes. This is intended to save fuel and time and enable more effective operations under varying weather conditions.
Its position along the east-west axis is expected to increase operational flexibility in adverse weather conditions, raise landing and takeoff safety margins, and improve on-time departure rates.
Airport currently operates with five runways
Istanbul Airport currently operates with five runways: three main and two spare runways extending in a north-south direction. The airport provides connections to more than 340 destinations through partnerships with more than 110 airlines.
In April 2025, the Triple Independent Parallel Runway Operation, described as a first in Europe, was launched at Istanbul Airport. The opening of the fourth main runway is intended to increase the airport’s operational capacity, efficiency and flexibility.
The new runway, located close to the hangar areas, is expected to help general aviation operations be conducted more quickly and independently. It will also support safe operations in crosswind conditions and the goal of four-runway operations.
