İstanbul Başakşehir beat Gençlerbirliği 4-0 in the sixth week of the Trendyol Super League to end a four-match winless run. Skov Olsen, Eldor Shomurodov and Selke scored for the orange-and-navy side at Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium.
Başakşehir scored twice in the first half
In the 6th minute, Thalisson’s attempted clearance of Brnic’s cross from the left fell in front of Skov Olsen. The Danish player’s first-time shot was parried by goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat.
Başakşehir took the lead in the 9th minute. Brnic, who received the ball on the left side of the penalty area following Kemen’s pass, sent it across the box, and Skov Olsen struck at the far post. The ball deflected off Abdurrahim Dursun in front of the goal line before finding the net.
The home side doubled its lead in the 33rd minute. Shomurodov entered the penalty area after receiving Brnic’s through ball and came face to face with goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat. He made it 2-0 with a shot from near the penalty spot. Başakşehir finished the first half with a two-goal advantage.
Selke converted the penalty
Başakşehir were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute. Referee Atilla Karaoğlan pointed to the spot after Selke went down in a challenge with Goutas inside the penalty area. Selke took the penalty in the 53rd minute and found the net to make it 3-0.
Başakşehir scored their fourth goal in the 65th minute. Shomurodov received the ball inside the penalty area after Skov Olsen’s pass from the right channel and sent a low shot past goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat’s right-hand side. The match ended with Başakşehir winning 4-0.
Başakşehir won after four matches
İstanbul Başakşehir began the league with a victory but then recorded one draw and three defeats in their next four matches. With their emphatic win over Gençlerbirliği, the orange-and-navy side have kept a clean sheet in both of their victories this season.
Gençlerbirliği suffered their third consecutive league defeat. The capital-based side collected seven points in their first three matches but have taken no points from their last three games, conceding 11 goals in that span.
Shomurodov scored his sixth goal
Eldor Shomurodov, who scored twice against Gençlerbirliği, increased his league tally to six goals. The Uzbek footballer has scored in five of his six appearances in the Super League, also finding the net once against Kocaelispor, Trabzonspor, Kasımpaşa and Galatasaray.
Selke and Skov Olsen scored their first league goals of the season for Başakşehir.
Managers assess the match
İstanbul Başakşehir manager Nuri Şahin said after the match that his team had executed what they wanted on the pitch. Şahin said he was pleased with the result after their four-match winless run, adding that they needed to stay focused on their play and aimed to produce this performance every week.
Assessing Shomurodov’s performance, Şahin said the footballer had taken a short break after the World Cup and that it had not been easy for him to prepare again physically and mentally. Şahin described the Uzbek player as an exemplary professional.
Şahin also addressed last week’s 5-0 defeat to Amed Sportif Faaliyetler, saying he was one of those responsible for that result. He said they were working to repay the support of president Göksel Gümüşdağ and the board, adding that they wanted to return Başakşehir to the title race it was targeting.
Gençlerbirliği manager Metin Diyadin said his team had failed to make an impact in terms of their play. Diyadin said the team had produced a poor performance with little physical engagement and deserved the 4-0 defeat.
