Kevin Magnussen is preparing to make his first race in NASCAR. The Danish driver, who diversified his racing program after his Formula 1 career, will take to the track in the opening Cup Series stage to be held at the Coronado Street Course in San Diego.
Magnussen will be part of Trackhouse Racing's Project91 initiative. This project previously gave names like Kimi Raikkonen and three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen the opportunity to race in NASCAR for the first time.

A new step after Formula 1
Magnussen, who left Formula 1 in 2024, has recently been running a program that also stands out in endurance racing. The driver, who signed with BMW's factory endurance program, achieved his first World Endurance Championship podium in his career at the last WEC race in Spa.
The Danish driver also races with a dual program in the USA. Magnussen, who is involved in both WEC and IMSA, will now add NASCAR to this schedule.
First statement from Magnussen
Magnussen said he is very excited and honored to have the opportunity to race in NASCAR. He noted that he found it remarkable that Justin Marks and the Trackhouse team give top-level racing opportunities to drivers outside of NASCAR with Project91.
He said he spent time with the team in North Carolina, preparing for the race week from seat fitting to pit stop procedures. Magnussen, who used praise-filled expressions for the team, expressed that he is eager to go to San Diego and experience this for the first time.
Project91 back on stage
Justin Marks, the founder of the Project91 initiative, also said he was pleased that the program was revived this year. Marks stated that the San Diego race was possible with the right opportunity, the right partner, and the right driver.
Marks emphasized that Qualcomm is a global brand and Magnussen is a global driver, bringing together the two elements sought for Project91. Thus, the initiative highlighted again its special format that opens doors to names outside NASCAR.
Context: Magnussen's NASCAR move shows that after Formula 1, he is moving towards a broader schedule covering endurance races, IMSA, and now American stock car racing instead of sticking to a single series in his career.
