LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, confirmed he is transferring to the Philadelphia 76ers. The 41-year-old superstar said he came very close to ending his career at the end of last season, but his passion for basketball prevailed.
The transfer, which was previously reported by ESPN reporter Shams Charania, became official with a post from James' social media account. The star player will sign a two-year contract with Philadelphia.
In his statement on X, James said, "When the season ended, I thought everything was over. I needed time to understand myself, and at that point I was almost certain that the playoff game would be the last game of my career. But I asked myself, 'Why do I keep playing?' and I realized I'm still ready to sacrifice, to work until I'm exhausted, to step on the court and compete, and to experience the feeling of being a champion again."
Stating he believes he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, James said, "I am very excited to open a new chapter in my career, to give the fans new energy, and to embark on this incredible journey one last time. Thank you, Los Angeles; Miami, I will always love you; and Northeast Ohio will forever be my home."
LeBron James had been wearing the Los Angeles Lakers jersey since 2018. The four-time NBA champion forward, who also previously played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, has been named regular season MVP four times and holds the record for the most NBA All-Star Game appearances with 22.
