Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, in the capital Ankara.
According to information obtained from Foreign Ministry sources, the meeting held on Friday addressed current developments in the Cyprus issue ahead of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's planned visit to the island.
Fidan stated that Turkey, as the motherland and guarantor state of the Turkish Cypriots, sees the most suitable solution on the island as two states living side by side. He emphasized that no approach that does not recognize the Turkish Cypriot people's fundamental rights such as sovereign equality and international status would contribute to a solution.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, with a Turkish Cypriot sector in the north and a Greek Cypriot sector in the south. The Greek Cypriot side rejected the UN's plan to reunify the island in 2004. Since the collapse of the last Cyprus negotiations in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in 2017, no formal negotiation process has been launched under UN mediation.
