Argentine star Lionel Messi continues to make history at the 2026 World Cup. Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0, taking his total World Cup goals to 18.
A night of records
With these goals, Messi claimed sole possession of the title of the World Cup's all-time leading scorer. He also made history by scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches.
This feat had previously been achieved only by France's Just Fontaine in 1958 and Brazil's Jairzinho in 1970. With this achievement, Messi once again demonstrated his consistency at major tournaments.
Missed penalty
Messi's night was not entirely positive. The Argentine captain failed to convert a penalty during the match, marking his first penalty miss at the 2026 World Cup.
With that miss, Messi became the player who has taken the most penalties (7) and missed the most penalties (3) in World Cup history. In his international career, Messi has taken 31 penalties, missing six of them.
Argentina's perfect start
The Argentina national team made a perfect start to the tournament with two wins from two matches. It is the first time since 2014 that the team has won its opening two World Cup games.
More importantly, Argentina achieved both victories without conceding a goal, a feat the team last accomplished in 1998.
Austria's struggles continue
The match also held special significance for Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabitzer. Sabitzer made his 100th appearance for the national team, becoming the fifth player in Austrian history to reach this milestone.
But the result was a disappointment for Austria. The team suffered its 10th defeat in its last 17 matches at World Cups and European Championships. In that span, it has managed only five wins and two draws.
While Messi and Argentina continue their ambitious World Cup campaign, Austria must address its form issues at major tournaments.
