U.S. rapper Macklemore announced that he will launch a concert series called the “Free Palestine Tour” in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In a statement on his social media account, Macklemore said events in recent weeks had shown that some things had changed over the past three years. He said there had been a collective awakening over the liberation of Palestine, the power of billionaires seeking to censor calls for it and what is expected of artists.
First concerts planned in three European cities
The rapper said he had reached out to artists who were using their stages in solidarity with the Palestinian people despite the consequences they might face. The concert series is planned to begin with events in Dublin on October 26, Paris on October 29 and London on October 30.
Macklemore announced that all proceeds from the concerts would be donated to organizations supporting the Palestinian people. Other details of the organization are still being finalized.
Macklemore calls on artists to take a political stance
Describing the events in Gaza as “genocide,” the artist argued that remaining apolitical was not effective. Macklemore said artists should use their stages not only for entertainment but also to address social issues.
Macklemore said people should oppose efforts to silence calls for “Free Palestine,” adding that what he had experienced was an issue larger than a single artist or stage. The rapper said everyone should pay attention if billionaires were able to decide which voices would appear on stage and which would be considered too dangerous to be heard.
Removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour
Following his messages of support for Palestine, Macklemore was removed from the remaining concerts on singer Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour. After the decision, Sheeran’s other opening acts also announced that they would withdraw from the tour.
Sheeran, who was leading the tour, had been criticized for largely remaining silent over developments in Gaza. The decision to remove Macklemore from the tour drew strong reactions from many people on social media.
