Mardin Anti-Smuggling Raid Uncovers 1500-Year-Old Mosaic
A 1500-year-old figured floor mosaic from the Late Roman Period and various historical artifacts were seized during an anti-smuggling operation in Mardin’s Ömerli and Derik districts. Two suspects are now facing legal action.
The Mardin Provincial Gendarmerie Command carried out an operation targeting historical artifact smuggling and illegal excavation activities in the Ömerli and Derik districts.
During the operation, a figured floor mosaic believed to be from the Late Roman Period and approximately 1500 years old was discovered. A coin, two rings, 13 objects, three precious stones, and a reference book titled "Ancient Roman Coins" were also seized.
The area containing the mosaic was handed over to the Mardin Museum Directorate, and legal proceedings were initiated against the two suspects detained in connection with the incident.
