US actor Mark Ruffalo, known for playing Hulk in Marvel films, made a surprise video appearance at rapper Macklemore’s “Free Palestine” concert in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.
In his message, which was shown on the giant screen at the concert at 3Arena on October 26, Ruffalo said, “Keep fighting for a free Palestine.” The actor said, “There will be no peace without equality,” and concluded his message by saying, “Have a great show, and keep up the good fight.” The message received a loud ovation from the audience.
All proceeds are donated to organisations supporting Palestinians
The Dublin concert was the first stop in Macklemore’s three-concert series organised in support of Palestine. All proceeds are being donated to organisations supporting Palestinians, including the Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. The series will continue with concerts in Paris and London this week.
Irish musician Hozier and Northern Irish rap group Kneecap performed during the evening. Actors Cynthia Nixon and Ilana Glazer also sent video messages, while a performance by the Gaza Children’s Choir was shown on screen. Hozier called for Ireland to approve visas for 55 Gazan students who had received scholarships.
He was removed from Sheeran’s tour
Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s US stadium tour about six weeks ago after chanting “Free Palestine” at concerts at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The tour’s organiser said the venues did not want to host Macklemore, while Sheeran said the decision had been made by the organiser.
Speaking on stage, Macklemore said the words “Free Palestine” had “become more controversial than the suffering that makes them necessary.” The rapper stressed that freedom based on the oppression of others was “not freedom at all” and said holding the series’ first concert in Ireland was highly meaningful.
