A protest on Monday evening against an event that far-right commentator Vito Quiles had planned near Deusto University in Bilbao, in Spain's Basque Country, turned violent.
Quiles had announced at 16:06 that he was cancelling the event after speaking with the Basque police, the Ertzaintza, over possible incidents. Deusto University also suspended academic activities and closed its campus that same afternoon.
Containers and vehicles set ablaze
As the crowd gathered at the call of student and antifascist groups began to disperse, incidents broke out around the campus at around 19:00. Rubbish containers were first set on fire on Francesc Macià Avenue; the incidents later spread to Lehendakari Agirre Boulevard and Luis Power Street.
At least six vehicles were set on fire, and a motorcycle belonging to the municipal police was used as a barricade. Street furniture and businesses were damaged, and some shops were looted. Traffic was blocked on many streets.

19 detained, including seven minors
The Ertzaintza detained 19 people, the oldest of whom was 22, including seven minors. Three people also became the subject of investigations for disturbing public order. The number of detainees rose from nine to 14 and then to 19 overnight.
The Basque Government's Ministry of Security condemned the incidents and said the activists had acted in a preplanned manner. The ministry also said that a group had thrown stones at the Ertzaintza station in Deusto. The opposition criticised the time between the start of the fires and the police's arrival at the scene.
The incidents in Bilbao occurred two days after violence in Barcelona ahead of Spain's general election on November 29, which Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described as “pure vandalism.”
