Restoration is underway on Kızılhan, a historic building in the ancient city of Beçin in Milas, in southwestern Türkiye’s Muğla province. Built in the 14th or 15th century under the Menteşe Beylik, it is the only known example in Anatolia combining a single courtyard with a two-story layout.

Excavation head Prof. Kadir Pektaş said the domes on the upper floor and the vault on the lower floor had collapsed. With support from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums and the Muğla Governorship, the domes, vault and walls are being repaired using original stones and bricks found scattered around the site. “We are not undertaking extensive reconstruction here. We have reinforced the surviving walls,” Pektaş said.

Work is expected to be completed in early 2027, after which the building will host summer school programs in the social sciences, as well as conferences and symposiums. Beçin, the former capital of the Menteşe principality, has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List since 2012.
