Adana-born NASA astronaut Deniz Burnham is continuing training ahead of the long-duration Expedition 76 mission to the International Space Station.
Burnham released footage from the training process. The footage shows spacewalk scenarios and work with hand tools that will be used on the exterior of the spacecraft.
She completes SAFER qualification test
In the captions accompanying the photos and videos she released, Burnham said she had taken part in a qualification test involving the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue, known as SAFER.
Burnham said she had to demonstrate that she could successfully carry out a self-rescue during the test. She said that, after the qualification process, her instructor added several more rescue scenarios and that the exercises were challenging and engaging.

Burnham practiced with virtual reality goggles as if she were conducting a spacewalk on the exterior of a spacecraft. During the training, she also tested some of the hand tools she will use during the spaceflight.
First spaceflight set for March 2027
Burnham has undergone intensive tests with NASA instructors and taken part in simulation training. NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas said Burnham’s first spaceflight in March 2027 would contribute to preparations for future exploration missions to the Moon and Mars.
As part of the mission, Burnham is expected to conduct scientific research and technology demonstrations that will benefit people on Earth. The journey to the International Space Station will be carried out with Russian cosmonauts Dmitri Petelin and Konstantin Borisov.
Burnham and her crew will depart from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Roscosmos-operated Soyuz MS-30 spacecraft.
