Latvia’s National Armed Forces announced that fighter jets assigned to the NATO mission patrolling and protecting the airspace of the Baltic states shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that entered the country’s airspace.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was hit at a considerable altitude near Rugai in the Balvi region. Authorities therefore assessed that its fragments may have been scattered over a wide area.
Area searched for fallen fragments
Latvian security forces secured the area where fragments may have fallen and began searching the terrain. The public was asked not to approach any fragments that could belong to the unmanned aerial vehicle and to notify the 112 emergency call center if they found any.
Air threat warning issued in four regions
Following the sighting of the unmanned aerial vehicle, an air threat warning was issued in the Augšdaugava, Preiļi, Rēzekne and Balvi regions. Residents were urged to remain indoors and not to approach low-flying or suspicious objects.
Iveta Berzina, a representative of Latvia’s National Armed Forces, explained that the warning was extended to several regions because the vehicle was moving toward Latvian territory and its flight path could change.
Warning lifted at 04:50
The Latvian army later announced that the threat had been eliminated. The air threat warning was canceled at 04:50 local time.
The country or actor to which the unmanned aerial vehicle belonged has not yet been determined. Latvian authorities said additional information about the incident would be released later.
