Nechirvan Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, backed the Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration, adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye as part of the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process.
In a statement issued Wednesday evening, Barzani described the law as an important turning point on the path toward lasting peace, confidence and stability for Türkiye and the region. Barzani said they believed peace and dialogue were always the best option and that the era of armed solutions had ended.
Barzani calls for support for the law
Barzani said the law represented an important opportunity to build trust among all segments of society in Türkiye and guarantee peaceful coexistence. He called on all parties to support the regulation and work to ensure the success of peace.
Barzani also extended his thanks and congratulations to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and all leaders and parties that contributed to the law’s adoption.
What does the law provide?
The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye passed the bill on Monday evening, bringing it into force. The regulation sets out procedures for postponing ongoing investigations and prosecutions involving members of the PKK terrorist organization, as well as the enforcement of convictions.
The application of these provisions is conditional on determining that the organization and its affiliated formations have ended their actual presence in all its forms and have surrendered all weapons and ammunition under their control.
Five-year postponement provision
Under the law, investigations and trials concerning covered offenses carrying a maximum prison sentence of up to 15 years may be postponed for five years.
Intentional homicide offenses committed as part of the organization’s activities, as well as offenses committed before June 1, 2005, that carry a life sentence, are excluded from the regulation.
